What is Counselling/psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a broad term to describe a number of talking therapies, including counselling and hypnotherapy. Therapists provide a service for those looking for support and treatment for a range of emotional problems and life circumstances. Many terms are used interchangeably, but counselling tends to focus on immediate situations and emotions, whereas psychotherapy often focuses on longer term issues, for example looking at the influence of childhood and past experiences as a way of understanding the present.

What is your approach and way of working?

I work in a very person-centred way, where one size doesn't fit all. With over 30 years experience in the field of emotional and mental well-being, I draw on a number of different approaches and tools, tailored to each person I work with.
Whether you just need to offload and talk through your problems and receive feedback from a different perspective, or whether you need support and practical advice to make changes, I can assist you to do that.

Depending on your situation and what we agree, your sessions could include elements of the following:

Counselling- Talking through your situation, thoughts and feelings
Psychotherapy- Digging a little deeper to work through persistent issues
Hypnotherapy - to retrain your brain to work with you rather than against you
Cognitive Behavioural therapy (CBT) - to look at unhelpful thoughts and behaviours
Emotional Freedom Technique ( EFT or Tapping)
Life Coaching
Emotional Needs Audit - exploring how well you meet your emotional needs and looking at ways to meet them more effectively.

Traditional forms of therapy prevent the giving of advice but that's changing. Current research suggests therapists who are able to give tailored advice and make suggestions where appropriate, frequently facilitate change more rapidly.
I will tailor my approach to suit you and we will work in partnership throughout.
My sessions are focused but not overly formal. I want you to feel comfortable!

How do I know if I need Therapy?
Only you can decide if you'd like to have some therapy, but if you are struggling with your emotions, finding day-to-day life difficult or having challenges making changes you want to make, you may benefit from coming to see me. Talking to someone confidentially who is not involved in your situation can make all the difference.
Are you fully qualified?
Yes, in addition to being a qualified Mental Health Nurse, I also hold a Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, the Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling, a Diploma in Counselling Supervision and Certificate in Life Coaching. Further, I attend regular trainings and updates to maintain my professional competence. I am a member of the Human Givens Association.
What happens at the Initial Session?
The initial assessment is an opportunity for us to see whether we are a good fit. It's important to see whether we both feel we can work together and make sure I am the right therapist for you.
You will have the opportunity to talk about what's bothering you, and that will enable me to assess what your needs are and devise a strategy for how to help.
I will ask a number of questions throughout the session, but there will be plenty of time for you to talk. Although you don't have to talk about anything you don't feel comfortable talking about. It's not an interrogation!
There is no obligation to have any further sessions after the first one, whatever the reason.

Are the sessions confidential?
​
Yes they are, although there are a couple of exceptions to this. I will explain them to you at the first session. In any event, I would never break confidentiality without discussing it with you first.

What will we talk about?
​
Whatever you'd like to focus on. We may go off in different directions at times, as you learn more and reflect on things, but ultimately you're in control.
​
Do I have to commit to a certain number of sessions?
​
Absolutely not! I will make a recommendation at the initial session, but it's entirely up to you.
Commonly, clients may start off having more frequent sessions to get some momentum before gradually reducing over time, but you will have total control over this. We will review progress on a regular basis.
Other factors such as time and finances may guide your decision, however, it's important to get the help you need in a way that works for you, so flexibility is a crucial aspect of how I work.

I still have many clients who book in on an ad hoc basis or every month, every six months and even annually for an emotional MOT. It really is about what works best for you and helps you the most.
​
What happens if I'm late for an appointment?
I will be ready to start the session on time and will need to end on time due to other appointments.
If you are delayed, we will still need to finish on time so I can be ready and prepared for the next client.

What if I need to change or cancel my appointment?
​
If possible, please give me at least 24 hours notice of cancellation in order avoid a cancellation fee.
If I'm able to offer you another slot the same week, the cancellation charge won't apply.
If I need to cancel your appointment for any reason you will not be charged for the slot.
​
How do I pay?
​
Payment can be made by cash or card on the day, or by bank transfer in advance, on the day of your appointment.
​
How much do sessions cost?
​
Standard 60 minute sessions cost £65.
​
The initial session includes an additional complimentary 15 minutes making a total of 75 minutes.
​
Longer 90 minute sessions are also available if you find 60 minutes isn't enough time for you. (There is an additional cost for this)
​
I also offer discounted session packages if you're going to have several sessions and would like to be as cost effective as possible. Further information is available on the Fees and Flexible options page.

Lastly...
Do you have a magic wand for a quick fix?
​
Sadly, no! When we're going through a tough time, it's natural to want to feel better straight away. Dealing with difficulties, working through thoughts and feelings, and taking steps to improve things does take time, but often not as long as we often think.
​
The truth is that even when a problem isn't resolved overnight, just taking the first step to get help and committing to change, often makes us feel instantly lighter. A stressed, emotional brain likes action. So just picking up the phone or sending an email to enquire about help can give us hope and that is a good start.
​
So there's no magic wand, and I can't make any guarantees, but I can say I will give it 100%, and if you do the same, then that hugely increases the chances of success.
Taking action is as close to a magic wand as we can get, and it will much easier having someone by your side helping and supporting you.
